Laser cutting
Cutting and engraving
A laser cutter uses a laser beam to cut or engrave sheet material. At FabLab Wageningen we have a laser cutter (BRM90130) with a work surface of 130 by 90 cm and a 100W CO2 laser.
Many sheet materials can be cut: mainly wood, plastics (acrylic, but absolutely no PVC) and paper, but also rubber, leather and some other materials. Our laser cutter can also engrave glass, metal or stone to a limited depth.
Cutting through metal requires a much stronger laser than we have. If you need metal parts, you can make a design, test it in wood or plastic, and once it works, send the design to a company that can cut metal.
Wood and plastics can be cut up to a thickness of around 10 mm. Because the laser beam is very thin, you can cut very sharp corners, and because so little material is lost, parts can be made to fit together perfectly.
The laser is always perpendicular to the sheet, so it only makes straight 90-degree cuts, unlike a milling machine. With a special attachment, our laser cutter can also engrave round objects such as bottles and cylinders.
